Western Swing Both Ways Poster
Did you know? Western swing music, like rock n’ roll music, was controversial from the get-go, in the 1930s, due to the perceived “indecent dancing” it inspired. Well, that, and the presence of alcohol sales at some of the dance halls where it was played. The fusion of jazz, blues, Appalachian, and polka, using amplified stringed instruments, enjoyed popularity until country music ruled the airwaves, phonographs and live music venues after World War II.
With antique wood type and a dance floor’s worth of dancers reimagined from an original mid-twentieth century cut and then hand-carved into linoleum printing blocks, we celebrate the genre-bending nature of western swing!
