Pedal To The Metal Print
This honky-tonk heartbreaker is the culmination of our first-ever Virtual Visiting Artist experiment. In 2019, In-Real-Life Visiting Artist Carlos Hernandez showed a piece of art in his Haley Gallery show that was such a hit, we wanted to revisit it this year, in a different size, and with fresh colors.
The print incorporates both screen printing and letterpress printing in the process of making the poster. Carlos laid down three layers of ink via screen printing, carefully packed up the prints and shipped them to us, and then Heather got to work, first typesetting and then printing, in three passes, wood type and hand-carved lightning bolts that required some daredevil typesetting. Silver and black ink, atop the vibrant colors of the screen printing, add the finishing rock n’ roll touch.
Though facing unique challenges in 2020, we wanted to find ways to work around the circumstances of the year and re-invent some of our usual activities and programs. The Visiting Artist program has always been a highlight of the year, as we get to spend an intensely creative period of time with a fellow artist and maker in the shop, who, while soaking up Hatch Show Print’s history, and swapping thoughts, ideas, and techniques on process with us, produces a whole new body of work that we then show in the Haley Gallery. This year, the travel and visits had to be virtual, and so we called upon a previous visiting artist to jump into this experimental approach. Carlos Hernandez, who owns and operates his own printmaking studio in Houston, Texas, called Burning Bones Press, like us, enjoys the camaraderie of collaboration, and since we already had an idea, we were able to move forward into two rounds of production easily.
