Deeds Not Words Poster

While the suffragists of Tennessee wore yellow roses to display their support of the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment, one of the rallying cries for women’s suffrage the world over, carried on banners in marches across this country in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was ‘Deeds, Not Words.’ This print commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment, that granted women the right to vote, officially adopted on August 26, 1920, following its ratification by the state of Tennessee on August 18, 1920. And today, it carries the message further.

Today, this message is applicable to any worthwhile cause or effort, big or small, reminding us all that our actions are what lend truth to the words. Paired with a freshly carved linoleum print block of a check mark, and letterpress printed in patriotic (a classic pair of colors for any poster, really) red and blue, it’s a solid reminder to show up and be counted, every time. The textured background was created using wood type flipped face down, so that the back side of the letter blocks are printed, and lends depth to the print without distracting from the message, printed using some of the shop’s big wood type.
