Alphabet Wooden Block Set
With as many alphabets as we have in the shop, wooden blocks have been on our minds for many years. We just wanted to find the right way to make them, using our type and imagery, selected from the millions of printing blocks we have in the shop.
Kismet! We teamed up with Uncle Goose, a maker of wooden toys based in Michigan, who have become recognized around the world for their beautifully made wooden blocks and other toys. The blocks are made without varnish (for safety), so they look like our printed posters do. The wood used to make the blocks is harvested from near where the blocks are made and happens to be basswood, a wood that many of our shop’s extra-large printing blocks and wood type are made from.
Franklin Gothic, one of our most well used and easily identifiable typefaces, was used for the letters, and the graphic elements that finish each block – the images and the decorative relief sides of the blocks that are painted a solid red or yellow – all came from printing blocks we have and use in the print shop every day.
The blocks are packed in a box branded by Hatch Show Print, so the owners of this wonderful set of blocks will be able to learn about the shop’s history, too!
