Capitol Theater Cooler Than the Coolest Print
This restrike, or reprint for Capitol Theaters combines a polar bear and icy lettering to reflect the most attractive feature of any movie theater in the summertime, air conditioning. Theaters started installing air conditioning in the mid-nineteen twenties, and Hatch Show Print designed and letterpress printed these advertisements for all of their Capitol Theatre customers.
Movie theaters were among the first commercial buildings to install air conditioning, and during the warm months of the year, it was debatable whether that or the quality of the film made for more appealing advertising. As theater names were rarely unique to one theater, the shop was able to sell the same advertisements to multiple theaters.
